Sales were up 9.5 per cent in September as consumer confidence in the housing market was boosted by 32 consecutive months of the base interest rate being left at just 0.5 per cent.

 Buyers in the north of England are leading the way with towns there seeing the biggest increases, according to the LSL/Academetrics house price index. The rise has been driven by more activity at the lower end of the market with flats and terraced homes accounting for 77 per cent of the climb, according to Halifax data.

But nine of the 10 towns that recorded the biggest declines in property sales over the past year are in southern England.
